On Saturday, July 16, Michelle and I arrived in Zermatt, Switzerland (at the foot of the Matterhorn) during a package tour that we enjoyed. This was at the end of a long, tiring day of travel, and as we unloaded our vehicle in the plaza, misfortune struck. I didn't see a 6" curb, and consequently tripped and fell hard ... first into Michelle, knocking her down, and then onto the cement curb. initially I feared that I had broken a rib, and while my self-diagnosis has now changed to a severe bruise, it is still causing me significant pain. The pain is enough that I am choosing not to ride today, even though I have not been able to ride since we returned home Friday (due to a variety of reasons).

Having just returned yesterday from our trip to Switzerland on which we left July 12, I was eager to resume riding today. But I am unable to get into the garage to get my trike, and the remote control is unavailable to me (Michelle is out of town with our car), so I'll have to accept another day off.

57TH OUTDOOR RIDE OF 2022 - TUESDAY, 712/2022

2022 mileage: 3065.8

Michelle and I are leaving on vacation today, going on a weeklong package tour of Switzerland. So today's ride was my last one for a bit. I left at 11 a.m. in 76° sunshine that climbed to 78° during my ride, and rode a round trip to the middle of Saline (13.0 miles in 1:45).

56th outdoor ride of 2022 - Monday, 7/11/2022

2022 mileage: 3052.8

On this nice quintessentially summer day, I began at 11:30 in 82° sunshine and rode the Platt/Packard Square (13.5 miles) in 1:49. A little on the slow side, but I was just glad to be able to get it done in the heat.

55th outdoor ride of 2022 - Sunday, 7/10/2022

Today, I had originally planned to ride early ... but then, as it had cooled significantly since yesterday, I decided to spend my morning hours composing instead, and ride in the late afternoon.

The Tigers played at 2:00 (our time) in Chicago, and I rode following my viewing of the dispiriting loss. After having won a season-high six consecutive games through Friday, they got spanked yesterday 8-0. Today was almost worse. Detroit jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a first-inning home run, but after that could do nothing, while allowing Chicago to keep chipping away a run at a time, until in the end they won 4-2.

With my heart heavy, therefore, I pushed myself out the door at 5:00 in 82° sunshine and rode a single round trip to Marsh Park, for 10.3 miles in 1:18. To achieve that mileage, though, I had to tack on a couple of laps in our complex at the end. When I was less than a mile from finishing, on an uphill stretch in right sunshine, the voice of the app announced, "WORKOUT PAUSED," I didn't want to stop on the uphill, and I couldn't have seen my phone in the bright sun anyway (to restart it), so I kept going until I reached a shaded spot at the top of the hill. And then, once I got inside, the Relive app didn't create a proper video today anyway.

54th outdoor ride of 2022 - Saturday, 07/09/2022

As we are leaving around 10:15 to go visit my in-laws today, I knew I needed to ride early and keep it not terribly long, so I began at 5:40 (!) and rode the Packard/Platt Square (plus a concluding lap in our complex), 13.8 miles in 1:48 — a nice brisk 56° when I began, up to 60° by the end. I also got this picture at a favorite stopping point roughly halfway through the ride.

2022 mileage: 3015.2

I gave myself a day off yesterday as I was absolutely exhausted. Today, though, I was glad to get back into it, and left at 6:30 to ride my round trip to Baker Rd. (with, however, the slightly shorter route home). But my phone was acting up - it quit altogether about 4 miles before I got home. Accordingly, today's video is only a partial one. At my early start, it was 67°, and that climbed to 79° during the ride.

We are experiencing a rainy day today, so I climbed on the stationary bike this morning for the first time since May 18. The screen rotation feature on my phone wasn't working today, so rather than watching a movie, i just listened to my sports-talk radio station ("97.1, The Ticket") as I pedaled for an hour, racking up 13 virtual miles.

52nd outdoor ride of 2022 -- Tuesday, 7/5/2022

2022 mileage: 2982.7

I usually like to begin my holidays with a good ride. However, as we had a late celebration Sunday night at my daughter's house, yesterday I honored my wife's request that I forgo a ride. Today, therefore, I was eager to get back to it, but couldn't ride until late afternoon, by which point it was 87° and quite humid.

Because of this, I settled for an extremely short ride that I had only done once before (last April), going down for a loop through the Silo Ridge subdivision, for 6.6 miles in 51 minutes.

Set off at 6:30 this morning (58° and cloudy, climbing to 64° during my ride), and did a modest ride—a single round trip to Marsh Park, augmented by one loop in Stonebridge on the way home, giving me 12.6 miles in 1:38.

50th outdoor ride of 2022 - Saturday, July 2, 2022

2022 mileage: 2963.5

Did an early ride today (6:55) in absolutely GLORIOUS conditions—68° and sunny when I began, and up to 73° at the end. I got a neighbor to snap this picture of me just before starting out.

I rode the round trip to Baker Rd. (for the first time since June 4 - 20.2 miles in 2:41).

49th outdoor ride of 2022 - Friday, 7/1/2022

2022 mileage: 2943.3

Yesterday heated up before I could get out, and as a result I chose to skip the day and not ride. Today, therefore, I was determined to get out early and beat the heat, and began at just past 6:00 (58° conditions that rose to 73° during my ride), and went around the Platt/Packard Square (13.5 miles) in 1:53.
